Avivo partners with the Xcel Energy Power Up Program to launch construction pre-apprentice training program

Avivo has partnered with Xcel Energy Power Up Program and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to launch an innovative construction pre-apprentice training program. This short-term training is no cost for eligible trainees and teaches them skills to enter high-paying positions in construction trades like electrician, ironworker, operating engineer, or general laborer.

“This program offers participants a great opportunity to earn high wages,” shares LaCresia King Lennick, service area director at the Avivo Institute of Career & Technical Education. “It’s a short-term training, only about 15 weeks from start to finish, and trainees receive financial incentives for attending – helping them meet their needs while also learning valuable skills to support themselves and their families.”

The comprehensive support the training provides participants sets this program apart from others. “Avivo offers financial incentives to eligible participants to assist with basic needs while participating in training, such as mortgage, rent, childcare, and electrical bills. Participants also receive assistance in obtaining licenses and acquiring interview and work clothing.”

The program has two parts. In part one, Avivo provides job readiness training and soft skills development over a two-week period. Part two is facilitated by Building Strong Communities, a multi-trade apprentice preparatory program, and prepares adults for careers in the construction industry. In the seventh week, individuals choose a specific trade path to pursue for the remainder of the program, totaling approximately 15 weeks.

After completing the program, assistance doesn’t stop, shares LaCresia. “Participants can anticipate numerous benefits, including the credentials and training to obtain union protected employment, access to Avivo support services, and guidance from a Mobility Mentor. Mobility Mentors support participants through the duration of their programming and aid in job preparation and obtainment. Following job placement, Mobility Mentors provide assistance for a minimum of one year.”
