Avivo recovery housing helps make way out of homelessness

April 13 Reveal Event celebrates Avivo, BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation, and build partners’ phase one completion of recovery housing renovation

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – April 9, 2018 — Avivo with BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation/HomeAid Twin Cities reveal newly renovated, family recovery housing on Park Avenue, Minneapolis, on Friday, April 13, at 1 PM. Build partners, an Avivo resident family, and community guests will tour one of four completely redesigned and updated apartments. Housing in Minneapolis is vital for mothers who struggle with addiction, and who are homeless or live in extreme poverty. Avivo pairs housing with family intensive outpatient treatment, where mothers can live with their children and achieve lasting recovery.

The philanthropic arm of BATC-Housing First Minnesota, called BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation, is funding the renovation of eight apartments in Avivo’s family housing on Park Avenue in Minneapolis. Four of the eight units are completed, thanks to BATC-Housing First Minnesota build partners, The Kingdom Builders and Crystal Kitchen Center. Both contractors generously donated their time and labor for this project, as well as covered costs for additional upgrades to fixtures and other details in the apartments.

The mission of BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation is to work in partnership with others to provide safe, durable, affordable housing for Minnesota’s homeless, veterans and others in need. Foundation manager Bob Bennet says supporting Avivo’s women’s recovery housing was an easy decision to make.

“One of the things that touched us about Avivo is that moms going through treatment can stay with their children, instead of being split up,” says Bennett. “To us, that’s really important.”

“The quality of this renovation elevates our apartment homes to an entirely different level,” shares Avivo president & CEO Kelly Matter. “These homes will help increase the wellness of the families we serve as we provide housing that’s critical for mothers to succeed at recovery.”

Lack of family housing for mothers looking for substance abuse treatment,is a barrier to recovery. Individuals Avivo serves are coming out of homelessness, abuse, and extreme poverty to take steps to lasting sobriety. Avivo pairs housing with family intensive outpatient treatment to help pregnant and parenting women succeed in recovery and move on to stability and employment.

Avivo provides the only family treatment programs in Minnesota where children, infant to age 17, can live with their mothers while moms are in treatment and aftercare. The organization serves 85 mothers and their children each year in family intensive outpatient treatment.
