Training for a new career for mother opens path to economic mobility, providing for her children

After learning one of her daughters had developed a major medical condition, Amber needed a path to earn a stronger source of income that only a career provides to support herself and her three children. She found a path to her goal through Avivo’s Medical Office Support training program.

“I didn’t want to continue to work at part time jobs,” shares Amber. “As a single parent of three, including a daughter living with a medical condition, I needed flexibility in the classes to fit around my schedule.”

Amber learned about Avivo from a friend who emailed her a flyer for Avivo’s Institute of Career & Technical Education. At Avivo, Amber found the flexibility and support she needed to graduate while caring for her children.

“I just jumped right into the classes at Avivo and completed them, and it actually has given me a second chance at life, just doing what I can as a mother,” shares Amber. “I loved how you can go at your own pace with the classes, and the hours were accommodating.”

While taking courses, Amber started to work with Autumn, an Avivo mobility mentor. With her help, Amber was able to fine-tune her resume and create a plan to find employment; a path to build on her certification in medical office support and become a nurse to “help as many people as I can.”

Now, Amber found flexible employment as a receptionist at Benedictine Living Community. She’s excited to have this employment that allows her to continue to care for her daughter.

“My life has definitely changed in a positive way. [This program at Avivo] has given me a chance to not only provide any and everything for myself, but for my children as well.”
