Volunteering at Avivo continues lifetime of volunteerism for Joy Nguyen
Volunteerism is and has been a lifelong passion for Joy Nguyen, Community Engagement and Outreach Manager at Marsden Services and frequent Avivo volunteer. Her volunteering started when she was young, at age 11, when she served as a cultural dance volunteer in her community. Since then, she’s expanded her volunteerism to include schools, nonprofit organizations, reading programs, and financial literacy initiatives.
Joy works at Marsden Services, a long-time partner of Avivo and “one of the largest privately owned facility service providers in the United States.” In her role, she works to connect Marsden directly to community organizations, government entities, and schools.
“Volunteering is one way to build a strong relationship with organizations like Avivo,” shares Joy. “I get to go in and spend time with people receiving services, to understand their passion and goals.”

Joy shares that Avivo holds a special place in her heart. “What really drew me in to Avivo were the people that work there… I was really impressed with Avivo’s commitment to helping people within the community get back on their feet and find a place for themselves,” she shares. “Whether it’s a place to work or finding a home to shelter themselves and their family, or just helping them through their recovery process. A diverse service array of services.”
Avivo’s commitment to helping individuals rebuild their lives resonated with Joy, who had experienced a layoff herself a few years ago prior to joining Marsden. She shares that her break from employment became a transformative period, leading her to connect with those facing similar challenges.
Now, Joy actively represents Marsden on Avivo’s Business Partner Council and volunteers in Avivo’s Workplace Success Strategies training program sharing practical insights.
She notes, “I feel like I can connect with participants going through the workplace success class, sharing challenges I faced, things I did to overcome them, and hopefully connecting them with careers at Marsden.”
One way Joy helps boost the confidence and interview experience of participants in Avivo’s training programs is to help with mock interviews, which give participants an experience similar to a job interview. She shares that sometimes to mock interviews can turn into real interviews for opportunities at Marsden.
Joy stresses the importance of continuous engagement and encourages other businesses to establish lasting relationships with organizations like Avivo.
“Volunteering with Avivo provided me with a sense of purpose and achievement that just goes beyond,” shares Joy.
