Stephen’s passion is to help others as part of his recovery

Three consecutive traumatic events in Stephen’s life caused him to seek treatment again. This time, he wanted his next step to recovery to include real stability, so he came back to Avivo’s outpatient treatment program.

Experiencing the loss of his mother and lifetime best friend, in addition to the death of his son, Stephen was shaken to the core. Avivo offered safety and services to work through this trauma.

“When I came to Avivo I needed housing,” shares Stephen. “Housing [while you’re in treatment] is one of the most important things.”

Stephen credits his success to Avivo’s counselors. He also believes he was successful because of his participation in many Avivo groups and extracurricular activities.

“They really cared for our well-being,” shares Stephen. “My life is 1,000 percent better now.” Upon completing treatment, Avivo staff helped him find permanent housing and now he lives in an apartment he loves – a brand new one-bedroom apartment.

While Stephen knew he needed to get well himself, he’d also set out to help others along the way.

“I made it my business to be here, because I just want to see other people succeed,” shares Stephen.

He’d do little things for other men in treatment like cooking in his apartment at Avivo. This brought him back to his roots, back to when he and his mother would volunteer to cook dinner for people in need. He’d also make coffee and greet new Avivo participants.

Stephen had further impact on others by working with Avivo staff to create an alumni group. The group links graduates of Avivo’s treatment programs with current participants through BBQs, picnics, and other activities.

“I volunteer every now and then, here and there, at different places to help them serve food… I’ve been volunteering for years,” shares Stephen, “And one of my favorite things is giving back.”
