Q&A: Learn about Avivo’s growing Mental Health Clinic

Avivo’s Mental Health Clinic has expanded significantly over the past year to help more Minnesotans. In this Q&A we learn more about the clinic from program director BJ McElrath:

What is the Avivo Mental Health Clinic?

We are an outpatient therapy clinic that specializes in providing individual, family, couples, and group therapy and counseling in the heart of Minneapolis. We can help people who find themselves struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma… all the various life-stresses, anger management and more. Whether someone needs an assessment or therapy services, we are here to help.

Who’s on the team?

I am so excited about the Mental Health Clinic team assembled at Avivo. We have a team of six therapists, a psychiatrist and a psychologist. Our team is diverse with BIPOC and LGBTQ representation. There is expertise in co-occurring concerns, trauma, severe and persistent illness, and other complex barriers such as homelessness and unemployment.

We have a variety of skills and modalities. One of our therapists is a Certified Trauma Specialist, another one has certification in EMDR. One of our therapists uses Art and Somatic Experiencing. We have Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Licensed Psychologist and Psychiatrist. More importantly, they all have a passion for the work they do and the people we serve here at Avivo.

Who do we serve?

Whether you’re in need of an assessment, individual therapy or relationship counseling, we are here to help… people who feel they are struggling, who are looking to improve and advance in their recovery and mental health, or struggling with some of their relationships. We can work with kids six and up, teenagers and adults.

If you have difficulty in accessing mental health services, we have options such as telehealth. In addition, we serve people from all socioeconomic backgrounds, races, cultures and genders, and can provide services to those who do not speak English as a first language with interpreters, as needed.

What is our mission?

Our mission is to support Avivo’s mission in the areas of recovery and mental health. We work to see individuals increase their well-being, and we also strive to see our communities free of economic and health inequities that may cause barriers to receiving the help they need. Our goal is to provide access even when the barriers feel too great. We believe that everyone deserves the tools to be well – to be healthy, and economically and socially well.
